Young Belgian Muslims: between religious reactivity and individualization

In Belgium, since the first instances of girls wearing headscarves in schools 1989, public discussion on place Islam and Muslims Belgian society has been almost constant. That debate become more polarized wake attacks 22 March 2016. The results presented this paper are drawn from sixteen group discussions twenty individual semi-structured interviews. We investigate weight discrimination processes identity formation light both reactive religiosity individualization secularization theoretical frameworks. Our data show that strongly identifying as Muslim is not experienced being exclusive other types identifications claimed simultaneously. Then, we illustrate reflexivity, appropriation, belief, well negotiation or even circumvention certain religious norms ongoing among Brussels’ youth.
